Kalamata is built atop the location of Ancient Pharai. It’s one of the most modern towns in Greece, with excellent urban and tourism infrastructure, and it can be a starting point for traveling around in the southwestern Peloponnese.

The old town, the Frank Castle just above the port, the numerous byzantine churches and the monasteries unveil the historical importance of this part of the city. In its picturesque narrow streets you may find many stores with local traditional products that you should definitely try.

The new town is a modern city with many neoclassical buildings and beautiful beaches. The marina on Navarinou Street, with the luxurious yachts and the numerous restaurants, is considered the city’s jewel! From there you can visit all the nearby beaches, should if you have a boat. Aristomenous Street is the heart of the city, where there are many restaurants, bars, cafés and stores. Don’t be surprised if you actually see Greek and foreign songs being danced by locals, according to the traditional “kalamatianos”, a famous Greek folk dance.
