Kalamata is built atop the location of Ancient Pharai. It’s one of the most modern towns in Greece, with excellent urban and tourism infrastructure, and it can be a starting point for traveling around in the southwestern Peloponnese.

The new town is a modern city with many neoclassical buildings and beautiful beaches. Aristomenous Street is the heart of the city, where there are many restaurants, bars, cafés and stores. Don’t be surprised if you actually see Greek and foreign songs being danced by locals, according to the traditional “kalamatianos”, a famous Greek folk dance.
