#1. Delos: What did Odysseus do with the three daughters of Anios who used to live in Delos?

The myth

When Odysseus and Achaei reached the island of Delos, the mythical King Anios had predicted that the war of Troy would last 10 years. So, he told the soldiers to stay there for 9 years and go conquer Troy on the 10th year. His three daughters, he said, would offer food to the soldiers during their stay to Delos. However, Odysseus had other plans. He kidnapped the three girls and took the to Troy, in order to provide food to the Greek soldiers. The girls got tired of the war and they asked God Dionysus to turn them into pigeons, so that they could fly back to Delos. Since then, it was forbidden to kill pigeons above Delos.

One of the most important museums all over Greece, Delos island is a Monument of International Cultural Heritage and is worth a visit while in Mykonos.

#2. Crete: How did Odysseus and his companions manage to escape from the Cave of Polyphemus?

The myth

The mythical Cyclops Cave may be in the south of Crete. After many days on the sea, Odysseus reached Cyclops' island with his boat. He and 12 of his companions stepped on the island and got into a huge cave, where there was plenty of food to eat. But it was the cave of the one-eyed Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, who ate 6 of Odysseus' men. In order to escape, Odysseus took a wooden stick, blinded the Cyclops, and managed to leave the cave with his companions. Blinded and angry, the Cyclops asked his father Poseidon to make Odysseus suffer during his journey back home.

#3. Corfu: How does Nausicaa, princess of the Phaeacians and daughter of King Alcinous, treat Odysseus?

The myth

After abandoning the island of Calypso, Odysseus was shipwrecked on the island of Phaeacia, nowadays called Corfu. While Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete, washes clothes in the sea with her maidens, Odysseus appears completely naked and begs for help. The other girls get scared and leave. However, Nausicaa feels sorry for the man, offers him food and clothes, and leads him to her father's palace. Odysseus becomes his guest, narrates his suffering, and the King decides to provide him with the ships that bring him back to Ithaca.

#4. Ithaca: How long did the journey of Odysseus back to his homeland, Ithaca, last?

The myth

After the 10-year war of Troy, Odysseus' journey back to Ithaca lasted 10 more years. When the disguised Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, he is recognized only by his faithful dog, Argos. Penelope, Odysseus' wife, who remains faithful to him during his 20-year absence, announced that only the man who manages to string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow can have her hand. When the contest of the bow begins, and none of Penelope's suitors win, Odysseus asks to participate. He wins and finally reveals himself in all his glory.
